Editors’ Review
If you dislike that achy, bloated feeling that other HTML editors can give your computer, KompoZer may be the freeware cure you're looking for. An open-source Web development tool built on the NVU architecture, KompoZer aims to improve upon the NVU's bugginess.
With KompoZer, you can lay out web pages visually, just like typing in a word processor, which means you don’t have to write code for every design element. This feature is known as the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. The program also allows you to switch easily between visual editing and HTML code, giving you more flexibility and control over your designs. Another great feature is the integrated file management via FTP. This allows you to manage and edit web files directly on your server without needing extra software.
KompoZer supports modern web standards, allowing you to create pages using HTML 4.01 and CSS. You have the choice between strict or transitional DTDs. It also supports building complex web elements like forms, tables, and templates, which are essential for more comprehensive web projects.
Meeting modern standards is crucial, and KompoZer excels in this area. It adheres to the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) guidelines, ensuring that pages are both HTML validated and CSS compliant. You can also use the W3C HTML validator directly through KompoZer to check your pages' compliance without leaving the editor.
It does a fairly admirable job of that, while not being bloatware. Major editing buttons live on the top three-tier toolbar, including a one-click Publishing icon as well as one-clicks for Image insertion and Table and Form creation. Font tweaks like Size and Style live in toolbars just below that, making for easy HTML editing. A Site Manager, including File tree, is anchored on the left, although it can be collapsed, and the WYSIWYG standard means that KompoZer can compete more than adequately with other, better-known editors.
Bottom Line
Currently packaged with Portable Apps, KompoZer's exposure seems to be growing. While this is a good thing, the program lacks a certain finish, potentially making it visually unappealing to "professional" users. Judging from the smooth, bug-free way KompoZer tested for us, it's definitely aiming to play the same tune that its competitors are.
