LabVIEW

Overview

CURRENT VERSION: Fall 2009

LabVIEW is an easy-to-learn, graphical programming language and development tool designed specifically for scientists and engineers, with built-in functionality for simulation, data acquisition, instrument control, measurement analysis, and data presentation. LabVIEW is widely considered an industry standard for test, measurement, automation, and control software. By teaching LabVIEW, you provide your students with a powerful software tool that makes them more marketable in the workplace and more efficient in research. Using LabVIEW, students and faculty can write sophisticated programs and applications in a shorter amount of time without needing advanced computer science training.

Eligibility

  1. LabVIEW must be installed on a university owned PC.
  2. Undergraduate students may only use LabVIEW in a university owned classroom setting.
  3. Graduate students may use the academic license if, and only if, it is used in research towards the completion of their degree program. For instance, a student may work with LabVIEW in research for their advisor/faculty and be covered under the academic license ? so long as the research is a required portion of their degree program.

Important Note: LabVIEW can not be used by a student or faculty outside of any academic purpose. For instance, a student can not create a program to be used personally or by others outside of their academic degree program and be counted under the academic license.

Distribution

Classroom licenses are available for use at UConn computer labs. Only one IT person, from each department can apply to get the software for all users within that department. For SIG member labs, it is the SIG contact person. The software can be obtained the University ITS Business Office located in North Campus, Math Science Building (MSB), ground floor, room 049. A package including CD's and documentation will be handed to you after you complete the official LabVIEW's distribution and right to use form. The current LabVIEW license will accommodate up to 100 concurrent users for all the university campuses.

National Instruments distributes the latest version of software every six months (November and May). NI designed this time schedule so that academic users can upgrade during winter and summer breaks.

Hardware

Overview
To promote and advance the use of computer-based learning in higher-education classes and instructional laboratories, NI awards corporate grants and product donations to qualifying institutions. NI grants are directed at classrooms and laboratories requiring assistance to implement virtual instrumentation as a core part of a hands-on learning experience. All equipment grants require the implementation of NI LabVIEW programming as part of the educational learning experience.

Eligibility
The NI Equipment Grant Program awards grants to higher education and/or core teaching laboratories only. Furthermore, proposals must clearly demonstrate that the products NI donates will be used to teach official student courses. Eligible institutions include four-year colleges or universities (or non-U.S. equivalent).

Grant Areas
The NI Equipment Grant Program is separated into five different areas of interest. All grant applications must clearly specify area of interest and illustrate how the classroom or laboratory application will advance the particular area of interest through innovative incorporation of LabVIEW technology in undergraduate teaching.

  • Measurements and Instrumentation
  • Applicable Classes: Circuits, Measurements, Instrumentation, Electronics, Mechatronics, Biomedical Instrumentation, Capstone Design, Senior Design
  • Recommended Products: LabVIEW, NI Data Acquisition, NI ELVIS

  • Dynamic Systems and Controls
